How We Paid $91,000 of Debt in 1 Year While Full-Time RVing

We didn’t get serious about paying off debt until 2017. Up to that point, we were living the standard American lifestyle of buying things on credit and making payments–even when we had the money to just pay cash.

How it started

So when we moved into our RV 3 years ago it was not with the intention of saving money. In fact, we purchased a very large Fifth Wheel (44’ Heartland Cyclone Toyhauler) and a truck (Chevy 3500 HD) brand new and essentially traded our $2,300 house payment with RV/truck payment and campground fees.

It wasn’t until two years later in Dec 2016 when Sean read Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover that we set a goal of being debt-free.

Then we got serious about paying off debt and were able to pay $91,000 in just 12 months. And we haven’t really sacrificed our standard of living to do it. We still stay in our preferred type of campground, which is full hook-up with paved pads and WiFi. We still go out to eat and have fun, but we do prioritize and make sure we keep our eye on the prize.

Watch the video below for additional tips!

Debt Reduction Techniques

Learn how to pay off debt, earn an income, and save money all while traveling full-time.

Here is what we have done to allow us to live the life we choose while working towards our financial goals.

  1. We kept our jobs.

We both work full-time remotely. We are not yet ready to retire. We’re in our 40’s and enjoy our jobs so we negotiated remote work arrangements and we’re able to travel while maintaining our salaries and benefits. To learn more about how to earn an income while traveling full-time, see 5 Ways to Fund Full-Time Travel.

  1. We sold stuff.

When we first moved out of our home 3 ½ years ago, we had 2 large storage units. After 2 years, we went back through our stuff and reassessed what was really important to us. We found that more than ½ of the items we saved, didn’t really matter to us anymore and we sold much of it. Now we have one small storage unit.  We also found that we were not using our motorcycle very much and decided to sell it too. Having trouble downsizing? See The 3 Areas That Make The Biggest Impact.

  1. We budget every dollar.

This, by far, is the most important part of our financial strategy. Prior to this year, we kept a very loose budget. Essentially, we kept a list of bills and made sure we paid them. That was it. That means we didn’t really track what we did with the rest of our income and it is very easy to spend money when you aren’t paying attention to it. Now we have a monthly budget that is geared towards our goals. It accounts for every penny of income. We use the Everydollar app to track spending. It’s not really about sacrificing; it is about prioritizing. We love the saying, “You can afford anything, just not everything.” The great thing is, you decide what is important. Want to know more about budgeting for the RV lifestyle, read our article, How Much Does It Cost to RV Full-Time?

Click here to get our FREE full-time travel budgeting worksheets.

  1. We have developed some strategies for saving money.

Along the way, we’ve found some ways to save money. For example, slowing down saves with monthly campground rates and less fuel. While we do budget for eating out, we save it for special occasions or restaurants we really enjoy rather than doing it out of convenience. We also don’t buy things on credit anymore so we don’t have to pay interest. For more ideas, see 7 Ways to Save on Full-Time RV Travel.

Why We Are Traveling Full-Time In Our RV

We’re often asked why we chose to live and travel full-time in our RV and would like to share our story with you.

Our Background

We have both moved a lot throughout our lives. Sean’s father was in the military and he was raised in England, Spain, Alaska, Montana, and Florida to name a few. Julie moved so often as a child, that she attended 10 different schools (K-12).

In addition, we both served 20 years in the military. During this time, we moved on average every 3 years. Between us, we’ve lived in 12 states and 3 countries. We also traveled extensively on vacations because we love experiencing new places.

Crossroads

In 2014, we found ourselves at a crossroads. Our youngest son had just moved away from home and we became empty nesters. At the same time, we were preparing to transition from the military. Our 3 sons lived in different states, and we weren’t sure where we wanted to settle down. Since we didn’t grow up in one place, there is no specific location either one of us considers “home.” Although we had never owned an RV before, we had been eyeing it with envy for years and thought it would be a great way to travel around the country and enjoy all it had to offer.

To see our RV click here to see the video about our Tiny Traveling Home.

Digital Nomads

Although we were coming to the completion of our military careers, we were not yet ready to retire completely. Instead, we were able to find positions that allowed us to work remotely. After 3 years of full-time remote corporate work, we also decided to become entrepreneurs. We now have this blog, a podcast, and YouTube Channel, 2 books, and a financial program called Full-Time RV Finance.

If you’d like to learn more about how you can earn an income while traveling full-time click here to read our article, 5 Ways to Fund Full-Time Travel.

Our Outlook

We aren’t escaping the constraints of society, we simply love the adventure and the ability to travel when we want. We still consider ourselves to be fully engaged in society with the added flexibility of being able to relocate when and where we want. As property owners and land owners for almost 20 years, we do not have a problem with the constraints placed on that ownership such as HOA or property taxes.  We also did not hate our jobs. In fact, we kept them and now work from the road.

After six years of living and traveling full-time in our RV, we recently purchased a home base. Now instead of Full-Time RVers, we call ourselves Fun-Time RVers because we hit the road often to enjoy all that it has to offer. We hope you will follow our adventure!

RV Holiday Tour – Decorating Our Small Space

I love decorating for the holidays! Although we don’t have as much space for storing decorations year round, I still find a way to make it work in our RV. Last year I collaborated with 14 other RVers to show you how we decorate for the holidays in a series called “Christmas in the Camper.”  Be sure to scroll down on this page for links to the rest of the articles in the series!

Dollar Tree and a Single Storage Bin

All of my decorations (except the tree) fit in one plastic storage bin. I’m pretty proud of that fact since I had about 10 of those bins when we lived in our traditional sticks & bricks home. I purchase the small things that I replace each year at the Dollar Tree. This includes ribbon for the cabinets and the garland for the tree.

See how I decorate my Fifth Wheel RV for the holidays.

The Tree

Our first two years in the RV, I just had a table top artificial tree. It was only about 2′ tall. This year, I decided to go back to a more traditional tree size. I also got a container of plastic ornaments so I don’t have to worry about them breaking as we move throughout the year.

See how I decorate my Fifth Wheel for the holidays.

Other Festive Ideas

Not only do I love decorating my own space for the holidays, I also enjoy seeing other RVers great ideas! Here are links to a holiday collaboration I’m in with other RVers:
