Explore Las Vegas – It’s More Than Just Gambling

Las Vegas is famous for its luxurious hotels, grand casinos, and extravagant nightclubs. But did you know that Las Vegas has so much more to offer than just gambling? Whether you’re visiting Sin City for the first time or coming back for another exciting adventure, there are plenty of unique things to do in Las Vegas.

Table of Contents
  • Who Should Visit Las Vegas
  • Walk Down the Vegas Strip
  • Explore the Hoover Dam
  • Ride a Roller Coaster over the New York Skyline
  • Visit the Shark Reef Aquarium
  • Watch a Show
  • Enjoy the Outdoors
  • Where to Stay

Who Should Visit Las Vegas

We’ve been to Las Vegas numerous times over the years, and in fact, Julie was even stationed there for her first Air Force assignment. As the headline says, there’s so much more to do here than just gamble. That makes it the perfect destination for couples, families, and solo travelers. It’s well known for bachelorette trips, destination weddings (we did that!), and just about any type of celebration you can think of. In fact, it’s at the top of my list of the best 50th birthday trip ideas.

Walk Down the Vegas Strip

A view of the Las Vegas Strip in the daytime

The first thing we do after arriving in Las Vegas is take a walk on the strip to see the sights. The Strip is diverse and colorful, filled with unique characters that will entertain you. Most of the casinos are themed and several even have shows.

Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas

One of our favorites is the Bellagio Fountain. Every thirty minutes the fountains dance to music with a dazzling array of colors. It’s the perfect place to catch a beautiful sunset, dance along to the music, and take some stunning photos.

After you’ve enjoyed the fountains, go inside to the free Bellagio Conservatory, an indoor botanical display. The theme changes a few times throughout the year. On our last visit, it was a magical fairyland.

Explore the Hoover Dam

View of the Hoover Dam outside Las Vegas Nevada

The Hoover Dam is a historic engineering marvel located only 30 minutes away from Las Vegas. It’s an ideal sightseeing destination for engineering and history enthusiasts alike. You can take guided tours of the dam and learn about its role in shaping the West.

Located on the border of Arizona and Nevada, you can stand in both states at once when you walk in front of the dam. One of the popular things to do at the Hoover Dam is to take a guided tour to see how the dam’s hydroelectric generators work and how the electricity is fed into the regional power grid. If you’re an outdoor lover, you’ll enjoy the Hoover Dam’s walking trail, which offers panoramic views of the dam, the Colorado River, and the surrounding mountains. You can also take a stroll along the pedestrian portion of the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which spans over the Colorado River and offers a stunning view of the Hoover Dam’s structure.

Ride a Roller Coaster over the New York Skyline

Nighttime view of the New York New York Casino in Las Vegas

If you’re searching for an exhilarating experience to satisfy your inner adrenaline junkie, the Big Apple Roller Coaster is a must-try. You’ll feel as if you are rocketing through New York City as you ride through corkscrews, twists, and high-speed drops on this incredible coaster. Located outside the New York-New York casino in Las Vegas, the Big Apple Roller Coaster is one of the most exciting amusement park rides you’ll ever come across.

Inside the casino, visitors of all ages can play carnival games.

Visit the Shark Reef Aquarium

A boy looking at sharks at the Shark Reef Aquarium in Las Vegas

One of our grandson’s favorite stops in Las Vegas was the stunning aquarium located in the Mandalay Bay resort. It’s a great destination for families and animal lovers alike. The aquarium features over 2,000 animals, including sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles. A particular highlight for the little ones in the touch tank for the stingrays.

Watch a Show

Acrobat spinning high above the crowd

No matter what your interests, there is a Vegas show for you. From comedy to musicals, there truly is something for everyone. A particular favorite of ours is Cirque du Soleil’s O at the Bellagio. There are actually several unique Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas to choose from, each performance is a spectacular production of stunts, acrobatics, and whimsical dance that leaves the spectators in awe.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Scenic road through Valley of Fire State Park outside Las Vegas Nevada
Scenic road through Valley of Fire State Park

Not many people think of hiking, kayaking, and other outdoor activities when visiting Las Vegas, but there are some beautiful areas all around the city. We’ve been bouldering and horseback riding in Red Rock Canyon, hiking at Valley of the Fire State Park, and boating on Lake Mead. If you’re there during the winter, there is also skiiing and snowboarding on Mount Charleston. If you visit Mount Charleston in the spring and summer, you can enjoy a scenic ride on the ski lift.

Where to Stay

With over 150,000 hotel rooms to choose from, there are certainly many options. When we stay in a hotel, we like to be on the Las Vegas Strip in the middle of the action. We prefer the suites at the Elara, a Hilton resort attached to the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. The suites are great because there are full kitchens and separate living rooms. They have a wonderful pool with two hot tubs. It is also attached to the Miracle Mile Shops so you have plenty of dining and show options right there as well.

When we take the RV, there are also numerous camping options around Las Vegas. From the campground at Circus Circus to lakefront dry camping at Lake Mead or the military campground on Nellis, it’s easy to find something that fits your preferences.

Las Vegas is a city of endless entertainment that goes beyond just gambling. From guided tours of the city’s historic wonders to breathtaking natural wonders, there really is something for everyone. Whether you’re visiting for family fun or a romantic getaway, Las Vegas will surely leave a lasting impression on you. So, join us on this journey, and let yourself get lost in the magic of Las Vegas.

Las Vegas RV Campgrounds: Nellis Air Force Base and Lake Mead RV Village

We love Las Vegas! We were married there and go back to visit at least once a year. On our last trip we scoped out two Las Vegas RV campgrounds: Desert Eagle RV Park on Nellis Air Force Base and the Lake Mead RV Village at Boulder Beach. Watch this video for a sneak peek and then read on for more details.

Desert Eagle RV Park

This campground on Nellis Air Force Base is available for military ID card holders and has 223 full hookups sites thanks to a recent expansion.

The large “legacy” section of the campground has huge, full-hook-up RV spaces with well-trimmed trees bordering a landscaped walking path. The beauty of these sites is the amount of room you have to really spread out and the bit of shade you get from the trees.

The Desert Eagle RV Park at Nellis Air Force Base is a terrific military campground with more than 200 full hook up sites. We especially like the legacy section with mature landscaping and some shade trees.

The new section has 44 – 46 ft. long pull-thru sites with full-hookups. Each site has a picnic table, but they are really close together. Also the only landscaping is desert rock/gravel. With a big rig, I’d definitely recommend trying to reserve a spot in the legacy section.

Desert Eagle Campground, the FamCamp at Nellis Air Force Base has recently added over 100 campsites.

You can make reservations up to six months in advance, and I’d definitely recommend it if you want to go during the winter.   Click here to learn more about camping at Desert Eagle RV Park.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

If you aren’t eligible to stay on base, camping with a waterfront view at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Please be aware, if you don’t have a National Parks America the Beautiful Pass, you have to pay $25 per vehicle (or $20 per motorcycle) to enter.

There is a privately managed campground overlooking Boulder Beach, called Lake Mead RV Village. It has 115 full hook-up sites with nightly rates from $34 to $50. However, you can do much better with the weekly or monthly rate. With the monthly rate, you save 50% of the nightly cost!

Next to this large RV Park is a more traditional style Boulder Beach Campground. There are several other campgrounds located around Lake Mead and Lake Mojave.

Free Camping – Beyond the Campgrounds

We also visited several boondocking (dry camping) spots outside the city. Options include waterside in the Lake  Mead National Recreation Area to the cooler mountain temps in Spring Mountain National Recreation Area. Read our review of drying camping near Vegas here.

Viva Las Vegas!

With or without an RV, we love Las Vegas. Watch the video below to learn about some of our favorite things to see and do.

Best Campgrounds in Nevada

There really is something about the state of Nevada that makes it near perfect for an RV adventure. It could be the inviting weather, the vast terrain, or even the warm hospitality of the locals. Most likely, though, it is all of those factors combined that make Nevada part of every RVer’s bucket list of destinations to explore. Even better, you can expect a wide variety of parks and campgrounds to stay in and explore.

Table of Contents
  • Cave Lake State Park
  • Great Basin National Park
  • Lake Mead National Recreation Area
  • Valley of the Fire State Park
  • Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort
  • Gold Ranch RV Resort (Reno)

Cave Lake State Park

Camp at Cave Lake State Park in Elys Nevada

Located in Ely, Cave Lake State Park has all the basics you need like pull-thru sites, big rig access, tent camping, and even free Wi-Fi. It also has an abundant and diverse wildlife. There are plenty of things to do here, including boating and fishing. If you’re visiting in the summer, you can go swimming, hiking, or participate in the Annual Bathtub Races. If you’re visiting in the colder months, ice fishing, skating, and snowmobiling are just some of the winter activities you can do at the park.

Great Basin National Park

View of the mountains from Great Basin National Park

Great Basin National Park is a stunningly beautiful and diverse landscape located in the eastern part of Nevada. It is home to Wheeler Peak, the second-highest peak in the state, and Lehman Caves, a limestone cavern filled with unique and intricate formations. The park is also home to the oldest living trees in the world, the bristlecone pines. Camping at Great Basin National Park is a great way to experience all that this incredible park has to offer. And with six campgrounds, there’s bound to be one for you to enjoy all the park has to offer.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Camping at Lake Mead near Boulder City Neveda

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has several campgrounds and dry camping areas. Our favorite full hook-up campground is Lake Mead RV Village offering 115 sites within walking distance of Boulder Beach. The amazing views of beautiful Lake Mead are the perfect backdrop if you want to go boating, sailing, swimming, and hiking.

Valley of the Fire State Park

Another stunning state park in Nevada that offers a fabulous campground is Valley of the Fire State Park. We love it so much, that it made our list of the best State Park campgrounds in the US. It has 72 campsites with power and water set among stunning red boulders. Well known for its amazing hiking opportunities, no visit would be complete without trekking the Fire Wave Trail, a 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that was so surreal we felt like we were on Mars.

Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort

Oasis RV Resort in Las Vegas Nevada

If you’re looking for a little more luxury, Las Vegas RV Resort in Las Vegas is a more upscale venue. With full hook-ups on a landscaped site, pools, and a putting course, it’s a great choice for those who want the authentic RV adventure plus the luxurious amenities of a modern resort. You can enjoy a bevy of activities including touring the grounds on the resort’s famous pink jeep or even playing various casino games.

Gold Ranch RV Resort (Reno)

Reno, Nevada is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts. From the Truckee River to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, there are plenty of opportunities to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful day of fishing in Lake Tahoe, a challenging hike in the mountains, or a thrilling ski or snowboard adventure in the winter, Reno has something for everyone. No trip to Reno would be complete without a visit to Lake Tahoe. Use this Guide to Secret Cove Lake Tahoe to find one of the hidden gems of the region.

A Casino Detour

And while you’re in the state why not take a detour to Las Vegas? Nevada after all is home to Sin City, where tourists from all around the globe regularly converge to enjoy the very best casino experience in the world. The Strip continues to be a moneymaking machine, with its largest resorts raking in three times more profit from gaming and attractions in the 2016 to 2017 fiscal year than the previous year. Sin City, clearly, is still thriving even as casinos everywhere are fending off the rise of online casino gaming, primarily due to advancements in gaming technology. Atlantic City Blackjack Gold from Slingo is a perfect example of innovative takes on traditional classics that gaming aficionados anywhere in the world can play using their mobile devices. In total Slingo has 21 games in its roster some of which integrate live dealers into the gameplay, and with virtual reality also now starting to enter the online picture, there is a distinct possibility that more and more players will eschew a trip to Vegas and instead just play at home. That being said, we highly recommend a visit to the city if you are camping and traveling in the area.

Even with the digital revolution, RVers need not worry as Nevada’s campgrounds and RV parks are surely here to stay. And there are tons of great ones in Nevada for you to enjoy.
