One Day In The Windy City – Chicago Itinerary

I tagged along with my husband on a recent business trip to Chicago. Sadly, I only had a single day in the windy city, but I did my best to make the most of my first visit. I’m a planner and like to save money so I spent some time trying to find the best deals for the activities I thought I’d enjoy the most. I’ll share with you my successes and failures in this endeavor and you can decide, which is better for one day in a big city: plans or improvisation.

How Much Sight Seeing Can You Do In One Day?

I knew right off the bat that there were a few things I wanted to accomplish on this trip like visiting the Sears Tower (it’s not called that anymore), taking a selfie at the “Bean” (that’s not really its name) and eating deep dish pizza (also not called that on the menu–geez I had a lot to learn about Chicago). Outside of that, I wasn’t entirely sure what I should include in my one-day itinerary. After a quick look on the internet, I realized that the big question really was, how much sightseeing could I do in one day? I’ve learned over time that an overly ambitious schedule stresses me out because it starts to feel like work.

Purchasing A “Money Saving” Attraction Pass

If you’ve been following our blog, you know that we are always looking for ways to save money. In my research I found two programs that seemed like a great deal for visiting the typical tourist attractions: Chicago City Pass and Go City. So what is the difference between the Chicago City Pass and Go City you may ask? Well, they both advertise up to 55% off attractions and have a range of options. The main difference is flexibility. See the City Pass is $106 and allows you to visit six attractions over nine days. I like that pace, but I didn’t have that much time on this trip. The $99 Go City All-Inclusive Pass allows you to visit 25 attractions in one day, but unless you’re just walking in and out the door, I don’t see how that is even possible. However, the Go City pass does have other options (fewer attractions or more days) at different price points, and I was considering purchasing their $80 3-Attraction Explorer Pass. I just wanted to check one more place–my old go-to: Groupon. Guess what, it had the Go City Card 3-Attraction Explorer Pass for only $67.50! Yay! I had a little trouble activating the Groupon voucher on the Go City App, but I called the customer service number and they resolved it right away.

Fail: Hop On Hop Off Tour

Typically if there is a hop-on, hop-off tour in the area I’ll take it. It usually provides a great overview of the city and a means of transportation. Two for one, a good deal right? Not so great a deal with the Chicago Big Bus this cold February day. I used their app to try to locate the pick-up point nearest my first stop. Couldn’t find it, so I used their app to see when a bus was coming next thinking I’d just try to keep an eye out for it. Well, that didn’t really work out well. The real-time tracking didn’t show any movement on buses for over 15 minutes. That may not seem like a long time, but I was in Chicago in FEBRUARY! It was cold! Freezing actually!

So I decided to start walking the 1/2 mile to the next stop on the bus route. Guess what? Never saw a bus or bus stop anywhere near that location either. In fact, although their website said they were operating, I never saw a Chicago Big Bus all day. And I stayed and WALKED around the freezing city all day. Why? Because I paid $25 to Uber there and was going to get (the rest) of my money’s worth, darn it! Plus it helped me walk off some calories in preparation for the Chicago Pie I planned to get for dinner. Seriously though, if it hadn’t been for my husband’s trip I would have planned to visit another time of year. In fact, there are a lot of great things to do in Chicago in the fall.

Easy One-Day Chicago Itinerary

In spite of the cold weather and missed bus opportunities (that I paid for in advance), I still had a great first visit to the Windy City of Chicago! After all, I did get to walk on a glass floor 1,353 feet in the air. I also took a selfie at Cloud Gate (aka “the bean”), spent several hours art-gazing, and ate my fill of some Chicago-style Pizza.

SkyDeck Chicago

SkyDeck is on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower). The iconic office building is the second tallest in the Western Hemisphere (the tallest is One World Trade Center). You can walk around the entire 103rd floor to get a view of Chicago, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding area. They say on a clear day, you can see four states: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan. It was a spectacular view! The best part to me was the Ledge, basically, a glass box that extends out 4.3 feet from the skyscraper and allows you to look straight down all 1,353 feet to the street below! Now I’ll admit, I was a little afraid and didn’t look down until I was out on it. Even then I was pretty scared, but you can’t tell here, can you?!

Skydeck's Ledge on the 103rd floor of the former Sears Tower

The Art Institute of Chicago

Chicago is known for its renowned museums and this one topped my list. Founded in 1879, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States. It features galleries devoted to the art of ancient Greece, Japan, Africa, and the Americas. I chose it because it is known for having the greatest Impressionist collection outside of Paris and currently has a Rodin exhibit through March. They have a couple of free tours each day as well. I enjoyed the highlights tour because there was really no way I was going to be able to see half of what they had to offer in the 4 hours I had for this particular visit.

Millennium Park

Over 25 acres, Millennium Park boasts an outdoor collection of architecture, landscape design and art. Of course, I had to take a selfie in front of Cloud Gate, the official name for the massive, stainless steel structure that’s become Chicago’s signature landmark. Click here to read some interesting facts about it and see it during construction.

Visit Millennium Park and the Iconic Cloud Gate

I also enjoyed watching the ice skaters at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. Now I want to return to visit it in the spring or summer to experience the Lurie Garden, an urban oasis that they say pays homage to Chicago’s motto — “Urbs in Horto,” or City in a Garden.

Giordano’s Famous Stuffed Deep Dish Pizza

Stuffed Deep Dish Pizza Pie in Chicago

What better way to end the day than with dinner at Giordano’s? Known for its famous stuffed deep-dish pizza, they actually use Wisconsin cheese and California tomatoes. If this looks good to you, they actually have locations in 7 other states and if yours isn’t one of them, they will ship it to you!

What Did I Miss?

Now I realize that there was so much more to Chicago than I was able to glimpse on this short visit. Please let me know in the comments below what I should put on my list for my next trip to Chicago.

Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area (Pensacola, FL)

As a military veteran, finding a perfect getaway spot to unwind, reconnect with nature, and bond with family and friends can be tough. Look no further than the Blue Angel Recreation Area. Situated outside Pensacola, Florida, this hidden gem is an ideal destination for military veterans seeking a serene and picturesque site for camping.

Eligibility

Please note that this is a military recreation area, which means you’ll need to meet some eligibility requirements. Typically if you have access to military bases, you can use military campgrounds. If you’re unsure or want to learn more about making reservations, please read our Guide to Using Military Campgrounds.

Location

This recreation is operated by Pensacola Naval Air Station but is actually 9 miles outside of the NAS back gate and off of Hwy 98 just before the Lillian Highway bridge to Alabama. The Florida Panhandle offers a unique blend of breathtaking nature and fascinating history. With its pristine beaches, lush parks, and vibrant attractions, Pensacola is truly the jewel in the Panhandle’s crown. The great thing about the Blue Angel Recreation Area is that it is close enough to serve as a base for exploring the greater Pensacola area while offering you a peaceful respite from the tourists.

Camping Options

There are two separate camping areas here along the northern shore of beautiful Perdido Bay: Battleship Row and Anchor Cove, as well as a mobile home rental section.

Battleship Row

  • RV: 75 large paved RV full hook-up sites. We have a 44’ Fifth Wheel and fit in it with no problem. Every site had a picnic table and a fire ring. There are two bathhouses and laundry rooms with change machines.
  • Tent: Near the beach, there are 4 elevated 10’ x 10’ tent platforms with picnic tables and fire rings. A single water spigot is shared. There’s also a beach bathhouse.

Anchor Cove

  • RV: 72 sites with water and electricity. There is a dump station available.
  • Tent: 4 elevated 10’ x 10’ tent platforms with water and electricity.
  • Cabins: 7 rustic cabins with a full-size bed, television, microwave, and air conditioner. No running water or bathrooms, but they are close to the bathhouse.

Bos’N Court

  • Mobile Homes: 12 two-bedroom mobile homes. Outside each trailer is a fire ring with a cooking grill and picnic table.

Amenities

Both camping areas have bathhouses and laundry facilities. Although they don’t offer cable or internet, our Dish Satellite and Verizon hotspots worked great in the Battleship Row section.

Activities

One of the great things about this campground is the range of activities. They have a 35-acre wooded paintball course (open weekends only), three 18-hole championship disc golf courses, mini golf, playgrounds, a beautiful beach, numerous hiking trails, and several geocaches. The Blue Angel Outpost Marina has kayaks, paddleboards, and sailboats for hourly rental. They even offer small boat sailing courses by reservation from April through September.

Reservations

You can make reservations online or by phone via Navy Getaways at 1-877-NAVY BED (628-9233). Blue Angel Park is open year-round for active/retired military and DoD employees and their family members.

Gulf Coast Beaches

Image of the white side and emerald waters of Perdido Key State Park beach.

Now, what’s a Florida getaway without a stunning beach? Known for its sugar-white sands and dazzling blue waters, Florida’s Gulf Coast is a favorite among tourists. The closest beach area to the campground is Perdido Key. It’s only about a 20-minute drive to the quiet beach at Perdido Key State Park. If you’re looking for a little more action, Pensacola Beach is actually about an hour away. The iconic Pensacola Beach Pier stretches 1,471 feet into the Gulf of Mexico, offering exquisite panoramic views. Be sure to take along your fishing gear, as the pier also allows fishing – who knows, maybe you’ll catch your dinner!

Explore History at NAS Pensacola Navy Museum

Two Blue Angel Navy fighter planes at the Naval Aviation Museum

Adding a touch of history to your trip, the National Naval Aviation Museum at Naval Air Station Pensacola is a world-class museum, celebrating over a century of naval aviation history. The museum is home to more than 150 aircraft, including rare and one-of-a-kind planes. It provides an interactive, hands-on experience that’s both educational and fun for every age group.

Entry to the museum is free, and you can even experience the thrilling simulators, like the Blue Angels 4D Experience, for a small additional fee. Don’t forget to check their calendar for special events, including the awe-inspiring Blue Angels practice shows.

Macaw Bird Rescue

Uncle Sandy’s Macaw Bird Park is an amazinga parrot rescue and bird sanctuary in Pensacola, Florida.

While there we paid a visit to Uncle Sandy’s Macaw Bird Park, a parrot rescue and sanctuary. Entry costs $5.00 for adults (13+) and $2.00 per child and includes one cup of peanuts to feed the birds. The money goes directly to help these beautiful birds and to educate people about the demands of owning a parrot, the kind of lifestyle a parrot lives, and how to provide them with essential needs to keep them happy and healthy. You’ll get one-on-one handling of an exotic bird and the chance to enter the largest open-flight aviaries in the Florida panhandle.

Best Campgrounds in Nevada

There really is something about the state of Nevada that makes it near perfect for an RV adventure. It could be the inviting weather, the vast terrain, or even the warm hospitality of the locals. Most likely, though, it is all of those factors combined that make Nevada part of every RVer’s bucket list of destinations to explore. Even better, you can expect a wide variety of parks and campgrounds to stay in and explore.

Table of Contents
  • Cave Lake State Park
  • Great Basin National Park
  • Lake Mead National Recreation Area
  • Valley of the Fire State Park
  • Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort
  • Gold Ranch RV Resort (Reno)

Cave Lake State Park

Camp at Cave Lake State Park in Elys Nevada

Located in Ely, Cave Lake State Park has all the basics you need like pull-thru sites, big rig access, tent camping, and even free Wi-Fi. It also has an abundant and diverse wildlife. There are plenty of things to do here, including boating and fishing. If you’re visiting in the summer, you can go swimming, hiking, or participate in the Annual Bathtub Races. If you’re visiting in the colder months, ice fishing, skating, and snowmobiling are just some of the winter activities you can do at the park.

Great Basin National Park

View of the mountains from Great Basin National Park

Great Basin National Park is a stunningly beautiful and diverse landscape located in the eastern part of Nevada. It is home to Wheeler Peak, the second-highest peak in the state, and Lehman Caves, a limestone cavern filled with unique and intricate formations. The park is also home to the oldest living trees in the world, the bristlecone pines. Camping at Great Basin National Park is a great way to experience all that this incredible park has to offer. And with six campgrounds, there’s bound to be one for you to enjoy all the park has to offer.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Camping at Lake Mead near Boulder City Neveda

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has several campgrounds and dry camping areas. Our favorite full hook-up campground is Lake Mead RV Village offering 115 sites within walking distance of Boulder Beach. The amazing views of beautiful Lake Mead are the perfect backdrop if you want to go boating, sailing, swimming, and hiking.

Valley of the Fire State Park

Another stunning state park in Nevada that offers a fabulous campground is Valley of the Fire State Park. We love it so much, that it made our list of the best State Park campgrounds in the US. It has 72 campsites with power and water set among stunning red boulders. Well known for its amazing hiking opportunities, no visit would be complete without trekking the Fire Wave Trail, a 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that was so surreal we felt like we were on Mars.

Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort

Oasis RV Resort in Las Vegas Nevada

If you’re looking for a little more luxury, Las Vegas RV Resort in Las Vegas is a more upscale venue. With full hook-ups on a landscaped site, pools, and a putting course, it’s a great choice for those who want the authentic RV adventure plus the luxurious amenities of a modern resort. You can enjoy a bevy of activities including touring the grounds on the resort’s famous pink jeep or even playing various casino games.

Gold Ranch RV Resort (Reno)

Reno, Nevada is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts. From the Truckee River to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, there are plenty of opportunities to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful day of fishing in Lake Tahoe, a challenging hike in the mountains, or a thrilling ski or snowboard adventure in the winter, Reno has something for everyone. No trip to Reno would be complete without a visit to Lake Tahoe. Use this Guide to Secret Cove Lake Tahoe to find one of the hidden gems of the region.

A Casino Detour

And while you’re in the state why not take a detour to Las Vegas? Nevada after all is home to Sin City, where tourists from all around the globe regularly converge to enjoy the very best casino experience in the world. The Strip continues to be a moneymaking machine, with its largest resorts raking in three times more profit from gaming and attractions in the 2016 to 2017 fiscal year than the previous year. Sin City, clearly, is still thriving even as casinos everywhere are fending off the rise of online casino gaming, primarily due to advancements in gaming technology. Atlantic City Blackjack Gold from Slingo is a perfect example of innovative takes on traditional classics that gaming aficionados anywhere in the world can play using their mobile devices. In total Slingo has 21 games in its roster some of which integrate live dealers into the gameplay, and with virtual reality also now starting to enter the online picture, there is a distinct possibility that more and more players will eschew a trip to Vegas and instead just play at home. That being said, we highly recommend a visit to the city if you are camping and traveling in the area.

Even with the digital revolution, RVers need not worry as Nevada’s campgrounds and RV parks are surely here to stay. And there are tons of great ones in Nevada for you to enjoy.
