Round Pond Recreation Area (West Point, NY)

If you’re traveling near the West Point Military Academy, Round Pond Recreation Area is a great place to stay for eligible military-affiliated patrons. Set around a beautiful pond, this seasonal campground is open from April to November and offers plenty of activities for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Campsites and Cabins

The campground offers a range of sites including 28 RV spaces, 4 pop-up spaces, 10 log cabins, and one rental cottage. All of the RV sites have water, electricity, a fire ring, a charcoal grill, and a picnic table. We stayed in site 16, which is farther from the pond, but we enjoyed the tranquil environment. It was also an easy walk from the site down to the main recreation area and beach.

The tent sites are all in their own wooded section of the recreation area. They don’t have any utilities, but they all have a fire ring, a charcoal grill, and a picnic table. They also aren’t far from the bathhouse.

The cabins have electricity, a mini-fridge, a table with chairs, a double bed, and bunk beds. Outside they also have a fire ring, charcoal grill, and picnic table. The rental cottage has electricity, plumbing, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom with a queen bed. There are also two futons for additional sleeping spaces.

Campground Amenities

As you can imagine by the name, there are a lot of recreational activities here. You can rent boats and kayaks or fish from the shore. Guests can also enjoy the designated swimming area and beach, playground, sand volleyball court, and nature trails.

While the sites don’t have sewer, there is a bath house with showers, as well as a dump station. Patrons can also choose to pay extra for the honey wagon service that will pump out their tanks.

Tour West Point

View of West Point Military Academy across the Hudson River

Located on the western bank of the Hudson River, West Point is home to the United States Military Academy. It’s a charming town that caters not only to cadets but also to tourists, history buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Start your trip with a bang by visiting the West Point Museum, which is situated on the grounds of the United States Military Academy. The Museum has over 60,000 artifacts ranging from military weapons to artwork and is dedicated to preserving the history of West Point and the American Army. Apart from the historical artifacts, the Museum also has an IMAX theater that showcases military documentaries.

Next on the itinerary should be a hike on the Hudson Riverwalk. It is a 2-mile walking trail that runs through the grounds of the Military Academy and offers a stunning view of the Hudson River. The trail is paved, making it perfect for walking and biking.

Visit New York City

Image of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum

One of the best things about this campground is that it is an easy train ride to New York City. A couple of sites in the city that are especially notable for military travelers are the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of the top military attractions in New York City. Visitors can explore an aircraft carrier, submarine, and supersonic jet. The museum showcases the history of US military aviation and maritime exploration. It is an incredible experience to walk the decks of the USS Intrepid and see the planes that helped to make aviation history.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum serves as a memorial and museum honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The site features two enormous waterfalls set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers, as well as a museum space that houses many artifacts from the attacks. In addition to honoring victims of the 9/11 attacks, the museum also has exhibits that showcase the impact of the US military’s response to the attacks and how they safeguarded the nation from further attacks.

Stay overnight at one of the best hotels near Penn Station to allow yourself more time to see the attractions.

Make Your Reservation

As previously mentioned, this is a military campground. Learn more about eligibility in our Guide to Military Campgrounds. The campground books up fast for West Point home games and graduation, so be sure to plan your trip in advance and make reservations.

Harper’s Ferry KOA (Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia)

Located adjacent to the Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park, this KOA is a great destination location. Whether you spend your days exploring the local area or enjoying the campground’s amenities, you’re sure to have a good time.

Watch the video below to see a tour of the Harper’s Ferry KOA.

Campsites

Views of three different campsites at Harper's Ferry KOA campground in West Virginia

One thing we love about KOA campgrounds is the variety of sites to choose from. However, the sites can also be a source of disappointment if you don’t book the right one for you and your preferences. Most of the complaints we saw on this particular campground were that the sites were too small. And, there are some very small sites. But, there are also big-rig friendly sites and everything in between. The important thing is to accurately enter the size of your RV when making your reservation and read the description for the site type that you are selecting. We had a small site that was just large enough for our 30′ fifth wheel and it met our needs. However, there were a lot of sites in the back of the campground that had much more space between sites that may be a better option for larger groups.

In addition to RV sites, they also have a very large tent site section, as well as cabins. The cabins also have a few different options from primitive with sleeping space, but no water to deluxe cabins with bathrooms and kitchenettes.

Campground Amenities

Large olympic sized swimming pool at the Harper's Ferry KOA Campground in West Virginia

There was a lot going on at the Harper’s Ferry KOA and we want to return with your grandson next summer. They had a huge pool and playground; an 18-hole miniature golf course; an indoor recreation hall with a movie theater, a basketball court, a game room, and a snack bar; and a big dog park.

In addition to the large camp store, they also had a separate store named Grapes & Grinds which sold specialty coffee drinks, local wine, and crafts.

Local Area

Restored buildings in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

The local draw to this campground is in the name: Harper’s Ferry. Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park is a must-see for anyone interested in American history. Located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, Harper’s Ferry was the site of John Brown’s raid on the Armory in 1859. This event played a significant role in the lead-up to the Civil War, and today, the park is home to a number of historical buildings and exhibits. Visitors can stroll through the quaint town and hike along the scenic rivers or the famous Appalachian Trail. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a beautiful place to spend an afternoon, Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park is definitely worth a visit.

Lincoln / Woodstock KOA (New Hampshire)

KOA Holiday Campgrounds are the perfect place to stay when you’re looking for a little rest and relaxation and the Lincoln / Woodstock KOA is no exception. If you’re planning a visit to New Hampshire’s White Mountains it’s the perfect location for our base camp.  The campsites are well-maintained and spacious and there are plenty of activities to participate in at the campground. If you’re looking for a little more excitement, there’s plenty to do nearby. The Lincoln Woodstock KOA Holiday Campground is just a short drive from the White Mountain National Forest and New Hampshire’s famed Franconia Notch State Park.

Campsites

Campsites in a KOA campground

One thing that we love about KOA campgrounds is the variety of site types so you can choose one to fit your rig and your budget. They range from the less expensive water and electric back-in campsites to premium full hook-up patio sites. Every standard campsite comes with a picnic table and fire pit. The KOA Patio ™ sites also include your own paved, private deck area with a grill, outdoor dining table and chairs, and fire pit.

As usual, if you aren’t traveling in an RV or want to have a large family gathering, they also have numerous tent sites, primitive cabins, deluxe cabins, and even a covered wagon with a private bathroom.

Campground Amenities

Walking a dog by the river at the New Hampshire KOA

Another feature we enjoy at KOA Holiday campgrounds is the amenities. The Lincoln / Woodstock KOA has a large play area with a sand volleyball court, jumping pad, and playground. Near the front of the campground, there is a small mini golf course, a game room, and a swimming pool for hours of family fun. Our favorite thing about the campground was the nature trail that leads from the campground down to a fishing pond and the Pemi River. It was a great spot to walk our dogs, but you could also ride mountain bikes as well and we saw many campers who brought inner tubes to float on the river.

The campground also had the standard amenities you come to expect at a KOA like a bathhouse, laundry facility, and large, fenced dog park. Another great feature for pet owners was an onsite outdoor kennel if you wanted to go somewhere for an afternoon without your pets.

Local Area

Natural views of mountains and waterfalls in New Hampshire

This campground is conveniently located for the best activities in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It was our first visit to the state and we loved every minute of it! From hiking in Franconia Notch State Park and along the Kancamagus Scenic Byway to swimming at the base of waterfalls, there is something for everyone.

Book Your Stay

Whether you are looking for a quick getaway or a family vacation, you can’t go wrong with this amazing KOA campground! Click here to make reservations and don’t forget to sign up for the rewards program to get 10% off every KOA stay. We love the rewards program because you also earn points to use towards discounts on future stays. And if you’re looking for other great campgrounds we’ve enjoyed, see our campground reviews here.
