Why Military Retirees Should Fly Space-A

One of the coolest benefits of being a military retiree (besides the pension) is the opportunity to fly space-available on military planes. Also known as “Space-A,” “taking a hop,” or “MAC flying,” it’s a great way to get free flights to destinations all over the world. Most flights, a.k.a. “missions,” are from one U.S. military base to another, but you will see occasional flights to civilian airports.

Quick Start Guide

If you’re new to Space-A or haven’t used it as a retiree, start with this guide for a full primer on what exactly Space-A flying is and how it works.

Learn why Military Space-A Travel is such a great benefit for military retirees. Make the most of your retired military benefits and use space-a flights to travel both in the United States and abroad. Space-A travel can be a great way to see the world!
U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Gregory Brook

Flying Space-A is best when you have time, flexibility, and a sense of adventure. The biggest challenge for active duty travelers is the unpredictable nature of Space-A flying. Passenger terminals publish flight schedules only 72 hours in advance, and you won’t know until the last minute if you have a seat. But the aspects of Space-A flying that make it inconvenient for active duty on leave make it the perfect option for retirees who have a lot of flexibility.

5 Reasons Why Military Retirees Should Fly Space-A

Wondering if Space-A travel is right for you? Take a look at these 5 reasons why flying Space-A is a great way for military retirees to travel.

  • You can stay at your destination as long as you want.

Have you ever gone somewhere and loved it so much that you would have stayed longer if only you didn’t have to catch your flight home? When flying Space-A, you can stay as long as you like! You have no monetary commitment to a particular flight, so you can extend (or shorten) your stay at will.

Flying Space-A also takes the guesswork out of planning your itinerary. Never been to Germany and are not sure how much time you need? No problem! Just fly space-A to Ramstein, explore until you’ve had your fill, then take a hop back to the U.S. or to another country in Europe.

  • There is no risk of losing money if your plans change or you need to cancel your trip.

Because you are not paying for flights in advance, you have no money at risk. You do not have to purchase trip cancellation insurance to cover flights. (When flying Space-A, I don’t recommend making any nonrefundable travel arrangements, such as hotel stays or cruises, based on your expected arrival date).

  • Flying Space-A encourages you to be spontaneous.

If you have the right attitude and treat Space-A as an adventure, you can enjoy wherever you happen to land. Being spontaneous could mean going to the passenger terminal and getting on the first mission that has seats. It could also mean deciding to enjoy a week in Hawaii when you get “stuck” there on your way to Japan rather than going to the terminal every day to compete for a flight to Yokota Air Base. The best travel adventures happen when you don’t stick to a plan!

  • You can enjoy the other facilities on the military bases.

Landing at military bases means you are in a perfect position to take advantage of other facilities and activities on the base. How about a SCUBA trip in Okinawa? A pontoon boat rental in Florida? Or a flamenco performance in Spain?  Those are just a sample of the things you can do through the bases’ Morale, Welfare, & Recreation (MWR) activity.

Also, don’t forget that many military bases are in prime locations around the U.S. and abroad. They have beaches, golf, hiking, and many other recreational activities you might seek in a civilian resort. Fortunately, the military facilities are significantly less expensive.

  • You meet great people.

One of the best things about flying Space-A is meeting other military travelers. Whether you’re still active in the military community, or you’ve become disconnected over the years, MAC flying will remind you of how helpful and supportive our community can be. Other Space-A travelers are happy to share advice, help you with your bags, or give you a ride in their rental car. As any traveler knows, the people you meet along the way are a big part of your experience; flying Space-A is no exception.

Hope to see you on the Space-A circuit soon!

Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area (Pensacola, FL)

As a military veteran, finding a perfect getaway spot to unwind, reconnect with nature, and bond with family and friends can be tough. Look no further than the Blue Angel Recreation Area. Situated outside Pensacola, Florida, this hidden gem is an ideal destination for military veterans seeking a serene and picturesque site for camping.

Eligibility

Please note that this is a military recreation area, which means you’ll need to meet some eligibility requirements. Typically if you have access to military bases, you can use military campgrounds. If you’re unsure or want to learn more about making reservations, please read our Guide to Using Military Campgrounds.

Location

This recreation is operated by Pensacola Naval Air Station but is actually 9 miles outside of the NAS back gate and off of Hwy 98 just before the Lillian Highway bridge to Alabama. The Florida Panhandle offers a unique blend of breathtaking nature and fascinating history. With its pristine beaches, lush parks, and vibrant attractions, Pensacola is truly the jewel in the Panhandle’s crown. The great thing about the Blue Angel Recreation Area is that it is close enough to serve as a base for exploring the greater Pensacola area while offering you a peaceful respite from the tourists.

Camping Options

There are two separate camping areas here along the northern shore of beautiful Perdido Bay: Battleship Row and Anchor Cove, as well as a mobile home rental section.

Battleship Row

  • RV: 75 large paved RV full hook-up sites. We have a 44’ Fifth Wheel and fit in it with no problem. Every site had a picnic table and a fire ring. There are two bathhouses and laundry rooms with change machines.
  • Tent: Near the beach, there are 4 elevated 10’ x 10’ tent platforms with picnic tables and fire rings. A single water spigot is shared. There’s also a beach bathhouse.

Anchor Cove

  • RV: 72 sites with water and electricity. There is a dump station available.
  • Tent: 4 elevated 10’ x 10’ tent platforms with water and electricity.
  • Cabins: 7 rustic cabins with a full-size bed, television, microwave, and air conditioner. No running water or bathrooms, but they are close to the bathhouse.

Bos’N Court

  • Mobile Homes: 12 two-bedroom mobile homes. Outside each trailer is a fire ring with a cooking grill and picnic table.

Amenities

Both camping areas have bathhouses and laundry facilities. Although they don’t offer cable or internet, our Dish Satellite and Verizon hotspots worked great in the Battleship Row section.

Activities

One of the great things about this campground is the range of activities. They have a 35-acre wooded paintball course (open weekends only), three 18-hole championship disc golf courses, mini golf, playgrounds, a beautiful beach, numerous hiking trails, and several geocaches. The Blue Angel Outpost Marina has kayaks, paddleboards, and sailboats for hourly rental. They even offer small boat sailing courses by reservation from April through September.

Reservations

You can make reservations online or by phone via Navy Getaways at 1-877-NAVY BED (628-9233). Blue Angel Park is open year-round for active/retired military and DoD employees and their family members.

Gulf Coast Beaches

Image of the white side and emerald waters of Perdido Key State Park beach.

Now, what’s a Florida getaway without a stunning beach? Known for its sugar-white sands and dazzling blue waters, Florida’s Gulf Coast is a favorite among tourists. The closest beach area to the campground is Perdido Key. It’s only about a 20-minute drive to the quiet beach at Perdido Key State Park. If you’re looking for a little more action, Pensacola Beach is actually about an hour away. The iconic Pensacola Beach Pier stretches 1,471 feet into the Gulf of Mexico, offering exquisite panoramic views. Be sure to take along your fishing gear, as the pier also allows fishing – who knows, maybe you’ll catch your dinner!

Explore History at NAS Pensacola Navy Museum

Two Blue Angel Navy fighter planes at the Naval Aviation Museum

Adding a touch of history to your trip, the National Naval Aviation Museum at Naval Air Station Pensacola is a world-class museum, celebrating over a century of naval aviation history. The museum is home to more than 150 aircraft, including rare and one-of-a-kind planes. It provides an interactive, hands-on experience that’s both educational and fun for every age group.

Entry to the museum is free, and you can even experience the thrilling simulators, like the Blue Angels 4D Experience, for a small additional fee. Don’t forget to check their calendar for special events, including the awe-inspiring Blue Angels practice shows.

Macaw Bird Rescue

Uncle Sandy’s Macaw Bird Park is an amazinga parrot rescue and bird sanctuary in Pensacola, Florida.

While there we paid a visit to Uncle Sandy’s Macaw Bird Park, a parrot rescue and sanctuary. Entry costs $5.00 for adults (13+) and $2.00 per child and includes one cup of peanuts to feed the birds. The money goes directly to help these beautiful birds and to educate people about the demands of owning a parrot, the kind of lifestyle a parrot lives, and how to provide them with essential needs to keep them happy and healthy. You’ll get one-on-one handling of an exotic bird and the chance to enter the largest open-flight aviaries in the Florida panhandle.

Sharing is caring! Feel free to share this article on social media or save the image below to Pinterest.

Visit Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area in Pensacola, Florida for a terrific campground and day use area for military personnel.
