Maverick Ranch (Lajitas, Texas)

This wonderful RV park is the perfect launching point for your Big Bend adventures! We stayed at this campground for two weeks and felt like we only scratched the surface all the area had to offer.

Watch the short video below to see the highlights.

RV Park and Golf Resort

Maverick Ranch RV Park offers 100 full hook-up sites, including 60 pull-through sites, as well as a swimming pool, community center, and laundry room. On the main road in front of the resort is a General Store. Guests of the Maverick Ranch RV Park also have access to all of the Lajitas Golf Resort amenities and activities including a fitness room, small shopping area, restaurant, and golf course.

Location

Maverick Ranch RV Park and the Lajitas Golf Resort are situated on Highway FM 170 between Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park on the banks of the Rio Grande.

Big Bend Ranch State Park

Big Bend Ranch is the largest state park in Texas. Portions of it border the resort. The park has 238 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. You can walk straight from your campsite to some of its trails.

Big Bend National Park

You have to drive about 40 minutes to reach the national park’s visitor centers and most of the trails. However, you can access the Mesa de Anguilla trail directly across the street from Maverick Ranch. We really enjoyed this trail that provides a view of the “big bend” of the Rio Grande.

Within in the national park, there are more than 150 miles of trails. Elevations range from 1,800 feet along the Rio Grande to 7,832 feet on Emory Peak in the Chisos Mountains. Elevation changes produce an exception variety of plants, animals, and scenic vistas.

Camping in Big Bend

If you don’t need hook ups, you can also camp inside Big Bend National Park at one of three campgrounds.

The Rio Grande Village Campground is the largest and has 100 campsites that range in size from small tent sites to large pull-through sites that can fit RVs up to 40′.

Another option for tent campers, trailers under 19′, or RVs under 24′ is the Chisos Basin Campground. It is located high in the rugged Chisos Mountains at an altitude of 5,400 ft. Please note: The road to the campground is steep and winding with sharp hairpin turns. Trailers over 19 feet and RVs over 24 feet are not recommended.

The Cottonwood Campground is a quiet, shady desert oasis located between the Castolon Historic District and scenic Santa Elena Canyon. It has 24 sites for RVs under 24′.

Star Gazing Opportunities

Both parks have earned the International Dark Sky designation. We were able to view the Milky Way almost every evening right from our campsite.

Situated in an International Dark Sky community, the star gazing at Maverick Ranch RV Park is not to be missed! We could see the Milky Way right from our picnic table.

Sharing is caring! Please share the image below on Pinterest.

Learn about the best places to camp near Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. We enjoyed the full hook ups and swimming pool at Maverick Ranch RV Park, but there is also primitive camping within the national park. No mater what type of RV, motorhome, fifth wheel, or camper you have, there is a spot for you.

Best Eats in Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg, Texas has a lot of restaurant options. We have come up with a favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner location in this historic Hill Country city. The great thing about these three restaurants is they are all located on Main Street in the heart of Fredericksburg. If you are going to spend the day wandering through the stores, art galleries, and museums on Main Street, these will be the perfect food stops for your day of sightseeing.

Breakfast: Old German Bakery and Restaurant

Enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Old German Bakery Restaurant in the heart of historic Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg TXWe chose this restaurant because of the great reviews on Trip Advisor and Yelp. We arrived mid-morning on a Monday and the place was packed! The only table available was in the very back corner. There seemed to be a mix of locals and tourists, which tells you something about the quality of the food. Many more folks were coming in to purchase the baked goods and pastries that are for sale at the front counter.

The other reason we chose the Old German Bakery and Restaurant was because they have German pancakes. These are also known as Dutch Baby pancake and are a semi-sweet pastry baked in the oven. The pancakes at this restaurant are very large. In fact, they are as big as the menu and hang over the edges of the plate. I added whipped butter and honey to mine, but you can add fruit jams or syrup as well. A side of a sausage patty goes well with the pancake.

Although there are other German restaurants in town, they claim to be the only German pancakes in town. If you are not in to the German pancakes, the menu also has traditional American breakfast items as well as some Mexican options. However, you are in one of the most German towns in Texas, so I recommend having the German pancakes.

Lunch: Java Ranch Espresso Bar & Café

Enjoy coffee and lunch at the Java Express Cafe in the heart of historic Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg TXA lot can be learned about a town from the patrons at the local coffee shops. Java Ranch Espresso Bar & Café on Main Street is, what I like to call, a Starbucks with a small town Texas feel. The décor provides an “outdoors in a cattle town” atmosphere. We were in the café for a late lunch, and the  other clientele appeared to be local even though it was in a tourist area of the town. There was one person who appeared to be a regular there using his laptop to get work done. And a few older “cowboys” in western wear talking about the local town happenings.

They have a café style menu offering a little something for everyone. There are also some freshly baked products for you to admire. The real reason to go, however, is the coffee and atmosphere. The vast selection of coffee is sure to have something you desire. Also, they have milk substitutes such as almond, soy, and coconut milks for those of us that choose not to have traditional dairy products. If you want to look before you go, the menu is available is on the website.

Java Ranch Espresso Bar & Café also has souvenirs for sale if you want to grab something as a memory of Fredericksburg.

Dinner: Hondo’s on Main Street

Enjoy dinner and live music at the Hondos on Main in the heart of historic Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg TXJust up Main Street is a must experience dinner location in Fredericksburg. Hondo’s on Main Street features indoor and outdoor seating, a full bar, and live music. There are not a lot of tables inside the restaurant, so it is a great opportunity to sit “community” style and meet some new people. The food is very good, but it really is the music and the crowd that makes the restaurant a must visit in Fredericksburg.

The service is actually very fast for how busy it is. I have to put in a special plug for the Pulled Pork plate. It is delicious. The pork is coated in a slightly spicy barbeque sauce and is served with cheddar mashed potatoes. If you are not a fan of pork, there are a lot of other options. Check out the menu on Hondo’s website. This site also has a list of the bands that are playing for the week. Pick your favorite band and spend some time eating and enjoying the sounds.

If you choose to take the day exploring all there is to see on Main Street in Fredericksburg, Hondo’s is almost directly across the street from the Old German Bakery and Restaurant, so you will be close to your car when it is time to head home.

Let us know what your thoughts are on these three Fredericksburg dining locations and if you have any favorite local spots in town.
