Fredericksburg, Texas has a lot of restaurant options. We have come up with a favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner location in this historic Hill Country city. The great thing about these three restaurants is they are all located on Main Street in the heart of Fredericksburg. If you are going to spend the day wandering through the stores, art galleries, and museums on Main Street, these will be the perfect food stops for your day of sightseeing.
Breakfast: Old German Bakery and Restaurant
We chose this restaurant because of the great reviews on Trip Advisor and Yelp. We arrived mid-morning on a Monday and the place was packed! The only table available was in the very back corner. There seemed to be a mix of locals and tourists, which tells you something about the quality of the food. Many more folks were coming in to purchase the baked goods and pastries that are for sale at the front counter.
The other reason we chose the Old German Bakery and Restaurant was because they have German pancakes. These are also known as Dutch Baby pancake and are a semi-sweet pastry baked in the oven. The pancakes at this restaurant are very large. In fact, they are as big as the menu and hang over the edges of the plate. I added whipped butter and honey to mine, but you can add fruit jams or syrup as well. A side of a sausage patty goes well with the pancake.
Although there are other German restaurants in town, they claim to be the only German pancakes in town. If you are not in to the German pancakes, the menu also has traditional American breakfast items as well as some Mexican options. However, you are in one of the most German towns in Texas, so I recommend having the German pancakes.
A lot can be learned about a town from the patrons at the local coffee shops. Java Ranch Espresso Bar & Café on Main Street is, what I like to call, a Starbucks with a small town Texas feel. The décor provides an “outdoors in a cattle town” atmosphere. We were in the café for a late lunch, and the other clientele appeared to be local even though it was in a tourist area of the town. There was one person who appeared to be a regular there using his laptop to get work done. And a few older “cowboys” in western wear talking about the local town happenings.
They have a café style menu offering a little something for everyone. There are also some freshly baked products for you to admire. The real reason to go, however, is the coffee and atmosphere. The vast selection of coffee is sure to have something you desire. Also, they have milk substitutes such as almond, soy, and coconut milks for those of us that choose not to have traditional dairy products. If you want to look before you go, the menu is available is on the website.
Java Ranch Espresso Bar & Café also has souvenirs for sale if you want to grab something as a memory of Fredericksburg.
Dinner: Hondo’s on Main Street
Just up Main Street is a must experience dinner location in Fredericksburg. Hondo’s on Main Street features indoor and outdoor seating, a full bar, and live music. There are not a lot of tables inside the restaurant, so it is a great opportunity to sit “community” style and meet some new people. The food is very good, but it really is the music and the crowd that makes the restaurant a must visit in Fredericksburg.
The service is actually very fast for how busy it is. I have to put in a special plug for the Pulled Pork plate. It is delicious. The pork is coated in a slightly spicy barbeque sauce and is served with cheddar mashed potatoes. If you are not a fan of pork, there are a lot of other options. Check out the menu on Hondo’s website. This site also has a list of the bands that are playing for the week. Pick your favorite band and spend some time eating and enjoying the sounds.
If you choose to take the day exploring all there is to see on Main Street in Fredericksburg, Hondo’s is almost directly across the street from the Old German Bakery and Restaurant, so you will be close to your car when it is time to head home.
