In June of 2014, we moved from a 2500 square foot home into a 350 square foot RV and have never been happier! If you feel like simplifying your own life, here’s a quick list of a few things I’ve learned to live without.
- Clothes – First go through your closet and dresser drawers and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit. Most of us are guilty of hanging onto things in case we finally lose those last ten pounds. Let it go, you’ll feel better without the pressure. Next, ask yourself when the last time was that you wore an item. If you haven’t worn something in the last year, put it in a bag to donate.
- Kitchen Gadgets – Once again, consider the one year rule. If you haven’t used something in the last year, let it go. Next, look for items that can multitask. For example, you can get by fine with just one or two great knives. You don’t really need two full sets! Finally, only keep items that make your life simpler. So if you never use your food-processor because it’s too hard to set up and clean up, get rid of it. The best food is fresh and only requires your two hands and a few simple tools anyway.
- Memorabilia – Items with sentimental value are always the hardest to part with. For me, it was anything to do with the kids—it really didn’t matter how many 3rd place spelling bee ribbons I had, I couldn’t throw them away. Just remember, if you get of those physical mementos, you still have the memories. Other tips to help you downsize your collection of memorabilia include taking a picture of the item or allowing yourself to keep a specified amount. Then you can choose what to keep, rather than what to get rid of. The change of mindset will make the experience more positive.
Organization Is Key
Once you get into your small space, organization is key to making it all work. There are so many clever solutions you can employ to keep everything in a place that is easy to find. Ikea is my absolute favorite store to find the best products for small spaces. Read more tips on RV Organization & Storage here.
